365telugu.com online news,September 9th,2025: A 70-year-old retired employee, who had been battling severe breathlessness, swollen feet, and difficulty in performing daily activities for over two years, has been successfully treated with India’s first indigenously developed Mitral Clip device (MyClip) in the Telugu states.

Patient’s Condition

The patient was suffering from Severe Mitral Regurgitation (MR), a condition in which blood flows backward into the upper chamber of the heart instead of moving forward into the body. This progressive condition left him unable to walk or manage routine activities.

Conventional treatment options include:

  • Open-heart surgery – highly risky for elderly patients.
  • Heart transplant – difficult to access and often not feasible.
  • Medicines – usually ineffective in advanced MR cases.

Considering the patient’s age and medical risks, doctors recommended a non-surgical mitral valve repair using a clip device.

Make in India Breakthrough

Until recently, only US-made mitral clips were available in India, but their high cost kept them out of reach for many patients. In June 2025, Indian company Meril introduced the MyClip, an affordable, indigenously developed alternative approved for use in India. This made advanced treatment accessible for the patient.

Successful Procedure

The transcatheter MyClip procedure, performed by renowned interventional cardiologist Dr. Sai Sudhakar, was minimally invasive and non-surgical. Following the procedure, the patient’s breathlessness reduced significantly, and he is now able to walk, exercise, and perform daily activities with ease.

Expert Opinion

Dr. Sai Sudhakar explained:
“Elderly patients with severe mitral regurgitation often face high surgical risks due to conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, obesity, frailty, and organ complications. If left untreated, MR can be fatal—over 50% may not survive, and one-year mortality can reach 57%. The MyClip procedure offers a safe, life-saving alternative for such patients.”

The Larger Need in India

  • Around 1.5 million Indians suffer from severe mitral regurgitation, with nearly 1.2 million linked to heart failure or prior heart attacks.
  • In the Telugu states (population ~10 crore), thousands of elderly patients face similar challenges.
  • Many do not improve with medicines and are unfit for surgery or transplant.

For such patients, the indigenous MyClip transcatheter valve repair represents a new ray of hope—making advanced, life-saving treatment more affordable and accessible.

Make in India Advantage

The success of this case highlights how the Make in India initiative, along with government support, is enabling world-class, cost-effective treatment options for Indian patients. The availability of MyClip at affordable prices ensures that more patients across the country can now access advanced cardiac care without the prohibitive costs of imported devices.
