365telugu.com online news,Hyderabad, 29th April 2022: Congenital scoliosis is a painful problem in children. Along with physical deformity, social taboo also suffers a lot. Most parents don’t identify the problem in early childhood, and even though they identify it, some of them don’t know about the surgical correction option. These deformities occur as a result of abnormally formed vertebrae or abnormal fusion of vertebrae. The majority of them can be treated by hemivertebrae resection which is quite a technical challenge. Dr K. Sri Krishna Chaitanya, consultant spine surgeon, KIMS Hospitals, Kondapur perform such complex surgery and relieve a 13-year-old boy. He explains the details.
“An NIA officer brought his 13-year-old son to KIMS hospitals kondapur, to show his scoliosis problem. They said it is congenital. Examinations revealed hemivertebrae in the dorsal spine with scoliotic deformity. There are no other intraspinal abnormalities. So, we decided to correct the abnormality with a surgical procedure. The surgery was most successful. It includes complete excision of the deformed bone and fusion of the spine to correct the deformity. These are very complex surgeries involving high-risk chances of neurological injury and life risk also. The entire procedure was done under intraoperative neural monitoring. Now the patient is pain-free and walking after the above procedures.
Importance of Intra Operative neural monitoring and 3D Printing
These are the two tools that facilitated the smooth running of the surgery. We planned the preoperative screws by 3D printing as the instrumentation and implants should be designed according to the patient. We had continuous MEP, SSEP and EMG monitoring during the surgery, so that we can be aggressive during the deformity correction and revert the steps if necessary. The role of the anaesthesia team is very crucial in such surgeries. Thanks to the team at the hospital, who made it successful.”
