365Telugu.com online news,July 16th,2024: Good news for diabetics: we have finally discovered the proper drug to reverse (totally cure) diabetes. Recent study has successfully restored the function of these beta cells. The procedure involved injecting stem cells into new beta cells.

They were later put into diabetic patients. The researchers behind this type of effort refer to it as “functional diabetes prevention.” Scientists at Mount Sinai, City of Hope, have made a significant breakthrough in the fight against diabetes.

Previous research has primarily entailed generating fresh beta cells in a lab dish and transferring them into a small device in mice or people. However, this new study was able to boost insulin-producing cells in the body in just three months. Treatment involves the combination of two medicines.

One is harmine, a natural chemical present in several plants that inhibits the enzyme DYRK1A, which is found in beta cells. The second is a GLP-1 receptor agonist. The latter is a diabetes medication that includes Ozempic. The researchers tested the therapy on mice with type 1 and 2 diabetes.

First, modest numbers of human beta cells were put into mice. They were then administered harmine GLP1 receptor agonists. Within three months of treatment, the number of beta cells had increased by 700%. There were no symptoms of illness. Even after one month of discontinuing the treatment, there were no changes in sugar levels.

“This is the first time scientists have produced a medicinal treatment that has been shown to increase adult human beta cell numbers in vivo,” said study corresponding author Dr. Adolfo García-Ocaña. “This research could potentially help future regenerative therapies to effectively treat hundreds of millions of people with diabetes.”

However, because this is an animal study, much more work is required before it can be used clinically. So far, only Harmin has completed a Phase 1 clinical study in humans to assess its safety and tolerability, while more DYRK1A inhibitors are planned to begin studies next year.

Perhaps most importantly, the researchers will soon test the combination of beta-cell-regenerating medicines with immune system modulators. Ideally, this would assist overcome a significant barrier: the immune system continues to kill new beta cells as they are generated. The findings were reported in the journal Science Translational Medicine.
