The notification states that the process will be conducted in two phases and will include a caste enumeration (caste census) alongside the general population count.

The Ministry of Home Affairs released this notification, finalizing the geographical limits for the census operation.

Census Phases and Deadlines:

First Phase: The notification clarifies that the census in states and Union Territories like Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Ladakh is scheduled to conclude by October 1, 2026. This deadline appears to have been set considering the geographical challenges in these regions.

Second Phase: For the rest of the country, the census process is expected to be fully completed by March 1, 2027, as per the gazette notification.

The government’s decision to conduct a caste enumeration alongside the general census holds significant social and political importance. It is expected to help gather comprehensive information on the population, economic, and educational status of various social groups across the country. This data is poised to become a crucial basis for future policy formulation and welfare programs.
