Recently, there were allegations that Sameer Raina made inappropriate comments about Ranveer Allahabad’s parents during the India’s Got Talent show. Following this, FIRs were filed against him in various states including Maharashtra and Assam.

In connection with this matter, cases were also registered against social media influencer Apurva Makhija and Sameer Raina. This issue is currently under the scrutiny of the Supreme Court.
The central government is expediting the process of introducing the Digital India Bill, which will replace the existing Information Technology (IT) Act.

During the ongoing Supreme Court hearing, questions were raised regarding obscene content circulating on platforms like YouTube and social media. The court has requested a response from the central government in this regard. In light of this, the government has fast-tracked work on the proposed Digital India Bill.
The bill aims to regulate social media platforms and digital content creators to curb obscenity. It is reported that the new law will include provisions to regulate YouTubers, digital platforms, and social media users.

The government has been working on this bill for nearly 15 months, with specific regulations outlined for sectors such as telecommunications, information technology, and broadcasting.

Due to the Ranveer Allahabad case, the government is revisiting the Digital India Bill. However, it has been decided that AI governance will be excluded from this law as it requires separate regulation. The government is working to provide the Supreme Court with satisfactory responses, aiming to address gaps in the existing IT law.
Currently, India has 900 million internet users. The existing IT Act, introduced when the number of internet users in the country was just 6 million, is now considered outdated.
