365Telugu.com online news, April 21st,2025: Renowned agronomist and global expert in sustainable agriculture, Dr. Mangi Lal Jat has officially taken charge as the Secretary of the Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE) and Director General (DG) of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). His appointment, approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), is for a tenure of three years.
Prior to this new role, Dr. Jat served as Deputy Director General (Research) at ICAR and held the position of Director, Global Research Program at the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), Hyderabad.

Dr. Jat brings with him over 25 years of experience in agronomy, conservation agriculture, and climate-resilient farming. An alumnus of ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), New Delhi, he holds a Ph.D. in Agronomy, specializing in soil moisture conservation for rain-fed pearl millet—an area critical to food security in arid zones.
Throughout his career, Dr. Jat has significantly contributed to sustainable agricultural practices for smallholder farmers in Asia and Africa. His research and advocacy have helped shape global strategies on food system resilience. With a prolific academic record comprising over 350 peer-reviewed publications, Dr. Jat has held influential roles at ICRISAT, CIMMYT, IRRI, and has also served ICAR for more than a decade as Systems Agronomist.
His work has been instrumental in the development of climate-smart technologies, regenerative agriculture, and digital innovations, directly influencing agricultural policy and practices globally. He has collaborated with prestigious bodies such as the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the International Society of Precision Agriculture (ISPA).
A Fellow of the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS), Dr. Jat has received several accolades including the prestigious Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Award, one of ICAR’s highest honors for outstanding agricultural research.
