He was admitted to AIIMS, New Delhi, after collapsing at his residence earlier in the day. Doctors declared him dead at 9:51 PM, marking the end of an era in Indian politics.

Born on September 26, 1932, in Gah, Punjab (now in Pakistan), Dr. Singh was a celebrated economist and the first Sikh to serve as Prime Minister of India. He led the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government for two consecutive terms from 2004 to 2014.

Known as the architect of India’s economic liberalization, Dr. Singh, as the Finance Minister in 1991, initiated landmark reforms that transitioned India from a socialist economy to a market-driven one. His tenure as Prime Minister was marked by significant milestones, including rapid economic growth, strengthened international relations, and landmark policies such as the U.S.-India Civil Nuclear Agreement, the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA), and the Right to Information Act.

Despite his achievements, the latter years of his leadership were overshadowed by corruption scandals, which contributed to the Congress Party’s defeat in the 2014 general elections. However, Dr. Singh remained a revered figure, known for his integrity, humility, and dedication to public service.

Leaders across the political spectrum have expressed their condolences. Prime Minister Narendra Modi described Dr. Singh as one of India’s most distinguished leaders and announced national mourning. President Droupadi Murmu and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar joined others in paying homage to his remarkable legacy.

Dr. Manmohan Singh is survived by his wife, Gursharan Kaur, and three daughters. His contributions to India’s economic and political landscape will be remembered for generations.
