365Telugu.com online news, February 13th, 2025: Today, “Kiss Day” is being celebrated across the world, as part of the annual Valentine’s week festivities. Held every year on February 13, Kiss Day is a day to express love and affection through kisses.

Kissing is an intimate, romantic gesture that comes in many forms, with the French kiss being one of the most popular styles. But how did the French kiss originate, and where did it come from? Let’s take a closer look at the history behind this passionate kiss.

Kiss Day, observed globally on February 13, is celebrated just before Valentine’s Day. This entire week holds special significance for lovers, but Kiss Day stands out for its unique celebration of love through kisses.

While there are numerous ways to kiss, the French kiss is one of the most widely recognized and cherished.

The Origins of the French Kiss

While many believe the French kiss originated in France-hence the name-the truth is slightly different. According to Cheryl Krishenbaum in her book The Science of Kissing, the term “French kiss” entered the English language in 1923, gaining popularity after World War I.

Krishenbaum suggests that the reason this style became known as the “French kiss” is due to American soldiers who, upon visiting France, embraced the use of tongues while kissing, finding it more natural and comfortable.

They then introduced this kissing style back home in the United States, where it eventually came to be known as the “French kiss.”

However, in France, this style of kissing wasn’t called the “French kiss” at all. The term was not used there until much later, and, as per Krishenbaum’s account, there wasn’t even a specific French word for it until 2014, when the Petit Robert dictionary added the term galocher, meaning “to kiss with tongues.” Interestingly, the Académie Française, which regulates the French language, has not yet officially accepted the term.

Why is it Called a ‘French Kiss’?

It turns out that the term French kiss was actually coined by Americans, not the French themselves. During the time of World War I, American soldiers stationed in France picked up the habit of using their tongues while kissing, and upon their return to the U.S., they continued the practice. The style gained so much popularity that it became commonly referred to as the “French kiss,” a name that stuck over time.

It’s no wonder that kissing is such an important part of human relationships-it’s a simple yet powerful gesture that not only nurtures emotional bonds but also provides a range of physical benefits.
