At least 23 people were killed in a huge fire that broke out in a popular nightclub near Baga Beach, close to the Arpora village in North Goa, late Saturday night (early Sunday morning).

According to information from the Police and Fire Department officials, the incident occurred at a nightclub/restaurant named ‘Birch by Romeo Lane’ shortly after midnight. A gas cylinder explosion in the kitchen is believed to be the primary cause of the fire. The single blast caused the flames to spread rapidly from the kitchen area throughout the club.

Majority of Victims Were Staff..

State Chief Minister Pramod Sawant revealed that most of the deceased were kitchen staff working at the club. Preliminary reports indicate that the dead include three women and approximately three to four tourists. Officials stated that some victims died from severe burns, while others succumbed to smoke inhalation and asphyxiation.

CM Offers Condolences, Orders Inquiry

Upon being informed of the disaster, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant rushed to the scene to review the situation. Expressing deep sorrow over the incident, he ordered a comprehensive inquiry. He stated that the investigation will determine whether the club adhered to fire safety regulations and promised strict action against anyone found negligent.

Prime Minister Expresses Condolences

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed deep shock over the horrific accident. He extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a speedy recovery to the injured. The Prime Minister spoke with the Goa Chief Minister to enquire about the relief measures being undertaken by the State Government.

The fire has raised serious questions about safety standards in Goa’s tourism and hospitality sector. The police have registered a case and initiated an investigation.
