365Telugu.com online news ,Hyderabad, April 18th, 2025:In a groundbreaking medical achievement, doctors at Preeti Urology and Kidney Hospital, led by Dr. V. Chandramohan, have successfully saved the kidneys of a 52-year-old woman through a complex 9.5-hour laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery. The procedure marks India’s first successful bilateral ureteral reconstruction using a minimally invasive approach — a feat previously accomplished only in China.
A Rare Case of Complete Ureteral Damage
The patient had undergone a hysterectomy three years ago, following which she developed a rare complication. An infection or surgical trauma had caused complete damage to both ureters the tubes that carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder. Over time, this led to recurring kidney infections, rising creatinine levels, and progressive kidney dysfunction.

Although temporary stents were placed earlier, the condition continued to deteriorate. When she was referred to Preeti Urology, a comprehensive evaluation revealed that 35 centimeters of both ureters were severely damaged, leaving only the renal pelvis intact.
“This kind of extensive ureteral damage from top to bottom on both sides is incredibly rare. Globally, only nine such cases have been reported and treated, none of them in India until now,” said Dr. Chandramohan, who shared the details during a press conference held at Taj Deccan Hotel.
A Marathon Keyhole Surgery with 13 Incisions
Unlike standard laparoscopic surgeries that typically involve three incisions, this complex procedure required 13 keyhole incisions to gain the necessary access and angles for precise reconstruction.
“Our team used two segments of the patient’s small intestine, each 35 cm long, to replace the damaged ureters. These were carefully connected from the renal pelvis to the urinary bladder on both sides,” Dr. Chandramohan explained.

The surgery, which lasted 9.5 hours, was performed entirely using laparoscopic techniques. The patient recovered well, is now able to walk, and her creatinine levels have returned to normal, indicating restored kidney function.

A Landmark in Indian Urology
This is the first time in India that a bilateral ureteral replacement has been performed entirely through laparoscopy. Previously, such reconstructions if attempted were done through open surgeries, which are more invasive and carry greater recovery risks.
“In China, similar laparoscopic reconstructions have been performed in just nine cases, with an average duration of six hours. In India, this is a pioneering success,” noted Dr. Chandramohan.
He further emphasized that such highly specialized procedures require a combination of advanced surgical equipment, multidisciplinary expertise, and proficiency in ureteral reconstruction capabilities that Preeti Urology has invested in extensively.
