In the recent six-run defeat against Rajasthan Royals (RR), he came in at No. 7, leaving many fans wondering why the legendary finisher isn’t batting higher, where his explosive power could benefit the team more.
After the loss, CSK head coach Stephen Fleming addressed this ongoing debate, providing a clear explanation. Speaking at the post-match press conference, Fleming revealed that Dhoni’s knee issues prevent him from batting long innings. Given that he also has the added responsibility of wicket-keeping, it’s unrealistic for him to play a prolonged role at the crease.
“MS judges it himself. His knees aren’t what they used to be, and while he’s still moving well, there’s an attrition factor. He can’t bat for 10-12 overs at full intensity. He assesses the situation and decides when he can contribute best. If the game is on the line, like today, he comes in earlier. Otherwise, he backs the other batters,” Fleming explained.
According to Fleming, the ideal time for Dhoni to bat is from the 13th or 14th over onwards, depending on the match situation.
“He’s too valuable to us as a leader and wicket-keeper to risk him playing long innings. He has never been someone to bat for nine or ten overs. From the 13th or 14th over onwards, he looks to make an impact, depending on who is at the crease,” he added.
Fleming’s statement makes it clear that Dhoni’s leadership and wicket-keeping abilities remain CSK’s priority in IPL 2025, with his batting role being carefully managed to ensure his effectiveness in crucial moments.
