365Telugu.com online news ,Mumbai, April 22nd, 2025: Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has marked a historic engineering milestone by completing the breakthrough of India’s longest railway tunnel – the 14.57 km-long Tunnel No. 8 – as part of the 125-km Rishikesh-Karnaprayag Broad Gauge Rail Line, developed by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL). This tunnel, located between Devprayag and Janasu in Uttarakhand, is a crucial section of the Himalayan railway corridor.

The breakthrough was achieved using “Shakti,” a state-of-the-art Single-Shield Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) with a 9.11-meter diameter – the largest TBM ever deployed in the Himalayan region. Of the total tunnel length, 10.4 km was excavated using TBM at an impressive average pace of 413 meters per month, while the remaining 4.11 km was completed using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM).

Union Railway Minister Mr. Ashwini Vaishnaw, who witnessed the breakthrough along with Uttarakhand Chief Minister Mr. Pushkar Singh Dhami, hailed the achievement as “a testament to India’s engineering excellence and commitment to advancing infrastructure even in the most challenging terrains.”

Chief Minister Dhami emphasized the tunnel’s transformative impact on the region, citing its potential to significantly enhance connectivity, boost tourism, and drive economic growth across Uttarakhand.

Mr. S V Desai, Whole-Time Director & Senior Executive Vice President (Civil Infrastructure), L&T, remarked, “This breakthrough is a symbol of our unwavering commitment and strong collaboration with RVNL. It stands as a collective accomplishment by our dedicated team, proving that innovation and perseverance can overcome even the toughest engineering challenges.”

L&T is responsible for Packages 2 and 4 of the Rishikesh-Karnaprayag Railway Line project, which aims to cut travel time from seven hours to just two and facilitate the Char Dham Yatra. The alignment passes through five Himalayan districts including Rishikesh, Devprayag, Srinagar, Rudraprayag, Gauchar, and Karnaprayag.

  • Package 4 involves constructing the country’s longest railway tunnel with a 14.5-km up-line and 13.1-km down-line.
  • Package 2 includes 26.6 km of tunnel excavation, 28 km of tunnel lining, two railway bridges, one road bridge, and associated embankments.

This landmark accomplishment further reinforces L&T’s leadership in delivering complex infrastructure projects in challenging geographies.
