365telugu.com online news,ANGON,February 2, 2026: Following reports of a Nipah virus outbreak in neighboring India, Myanmar has significantly tightened health surveillance at its international gateways, with a primary focus on Yangon International Airport.
The move comes as health authorities across Asia ramp up defenses against the rare but high-fatality zoonotic virus. While the Myanmar Ministry of Health confirmed that no suspected cases have been detected within the country to date, the government has classified the measures as a “priority precautionary step.”
Targeted Screening for Arrivals
According to a report by the state-owned daily The Global New Light of Myanmar, health officials are paying “special attention” to passengers arriving from India, particularly the state of West Bengal, where recent infections have been confirmed.
Thermal Scanning: All international arrivals are being monitored for high fever, a primary symptom of the virus.

Awareness and Containment Strategy
The Ministry of Health has deployed informational posters and distributed leaflets throughout airport terminals to educate travelers on the risks and symptoms of the virus.
In a recent advisory, the Ministry urged citizens to:
Avoid Unnecessary Travel: Specifically to high-risk areas currently experiencing active outbreaks.
Monitor Health for 14 Days: Anyone returning from affected regions who develops a fever or respiratory issues within two weeks is instructed to seek immediate medical attention.
Report Unusual Animal Deaths: Given the virus’s transmission from fruit bats and pigs, the public is encouraged to report any unusual clusters of animal deaths to local authorities.

Myanmar’s decision follows a regional trend of “COVID-style” screening reintroduction. In late January 2026, Singapore, Thailand, and Hong Kong all announced enhanced airport checks.
The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies the Nipah virus as a priority pathogen due to its epidemic potential and a mortality rate that can range from 40% to 75%.
“Our shared borders and large population of fruit bats make vigilance essential,” a health ministry official stated. “We are coordinating closely with airport agencies to ensure that our infectious disease guidelines are strictly followed to prevent a public health emergency.”
