365Telugu.com Online News, Hyderabad, February 26th, 2025: Google is set to remove SMS-based Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) for Gmail accounts soon. According to the latest reports, the company is replacing SMS codes with QR codes to enhance security. This move is considered a crucial step in strengthening Google account security.

Why is Google Removing SMS-Based 2FA?

Currently, Gmail users receive a six-digit authentication code via SMS during login. However, cybercriminals use phishing and SIM-swapping techniques to steal these codes, making them vulnerable to hacking. To address this issue, Google is introducing a more secure authentication method.

How Will QR Code-Based 2FA Work?

  • Instead of SMS, users will be provided with a QR code
  • Users must scan it using their smartphone camera or Google Authenticator app
  • QR codes will make the login process more secure
  • This method helps prevent phishing and SIM-swapping attacks

Official Statement from Google

Google spokesperson Ross Richendrfer stated:
“SMS codes have become a major security risk for users. That’s why we are introducing an innovative approach to enhance user protection.”

More Security Updates Expected

Google already supports Time-Based One-Time Passwords (TOTP), Google Authenticator, and smartphone login prompts. However, reports suggest that the option to receive codes via phone calls may also be discontinued. With these changes, Google account security is set to improve significantly.
