Amanda Malu, Chief Executive of Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao, celebrated the achievement: “This outstanding result reflects the global appeal and excellence of New Zealand’s universities. It reaffirms our position as a world-class, inclusive education destination known for sustainability, quality teaching, and impactful research.”

Strong Performance Across the Board

Four of New Zealand’s eight universities-University of Auckland, University of Otago, Massey University, and University of Canterbury-improved their performance in the Citations Per Faculty category, signaling growing research impact.

The International Student Ratio also improved significantly, a positive sign of post-pandemic recovery. Three universities now rank among the global top 100 for internationalisation:

  • Auckland University of Technology rose three spots to 39th
  • Lincoln University climbed 35 positions to 53rd
  • Massey University advanced 25 places to 71st

Despite its relatively small population, New Zealand’s higher education sector outperforms many global peers. Among countries with at least eight ranked institutions, New Zealand holds an average score of 51, placing it fifth globally.

Global Leader in Sustainability

New Zealand is also a leader in sustainability-focused research and education, ranking second only to Sweden in this category. Three of its universities are ranked among the top 100 globally for sustainability indicators in the QS rankings.

“These rankings are a powerful testament to the quality and vision of New Zealand’s education system,” added Malu. “They highlight our global leadership not only in academics but in preparing students to address future challenges.”
