365telugu.com online news,Hyderabad, December 26, 2025:NMDC Limited, India’s premier iron ore producer, has entered into a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Colorado School of Mines (CSM), USA. The partnership is set to drive a new era of research and innovation in mining technology, sustainable practices, and the recovery of critical minerals from mining waste.
The agreement was signed by Shri Vinay Kumar, Director (Technical), NMDC, and represents a major step toward integrating global research standards into India’s domestic mining ecosystem.
A Tech-Forward Mining Future
The collaboration focuses on “Mining 4.0,” leveraging next-generation digital tools to optimize operations. Key areas of joint research include:
Automation & Digitalization: Implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), and the Internet of Things (IoT).
Autonomous Systems: Development of drone technology and self-driving vehicles for mine sites.
Advanced Metallurgy: Innovative ironmaking technologies and beneficiation processes using indigenous raw materials.
Sustainability and the “Circular” Economy
A core objective of the MoU is the extraction of Critical Minerals and Rare Earth Elements (REEs) from existing waste streams. By processing mining tailings, coal ash, and low-grade ores, the two institutions aim to unlock new mineral sources essential for the global clean energy transition.
This “waste-to-wealth” approach aligns with India’s national goal of securing a self-reliant supply chain for strategic industries and advanced manufacturing.

Commenting on the partnership, Shri Amitava Mukherjee, CMD, NMDC, stated:
“This collaboration marks a new chapter in advancing the extraction of critical minerals from mining waste. Through this MoU, NMDC is strengthening its research capabilities and accelerating the adoption of advanced technologies. Our larger goal is to make India self-reliant in critical minerals while ensuring sustainable and responsible mining practices.”
