Its protagonist, 13-year-old Mei Lee (voiced by Rosalie Chiang), morphs into a giant fluffy red panda whenever she gets emotionally triggered. A confident yet easy to turn to rage, Mei Lee must now learn to control her emotions to prevent others in her school and community from learning this secret.

To help her tide over this, she has her squad of trusted friends and supportive family. Pinning the representation on screen obstacle perfectly, this Domee Shi directorial highlights the cultural aspects of immigrant families in Canada. Based in the city of Toronto, the film magnificently and
hilariously weaves the food, décor and beliefs of its immigrant characters. The narrative captures the heart-warming, strong and yet, estranged bond between Mei Lee and her mother (voiced by Sandra Oh) as she is caged in a push-pull relationship with her.

Stunning visuals, brilliant writing and a narrative that focuses on acceptanc e and emotions, Turning Red makes you laugh, cry and connect with its characters with an adeptness typical to Pixar. Not to forget the extensive detailing that went into designing each of Mei Lee’s friends, who all contributed to making this film a captivating watch. Turning Red is a brave, life-affirming film that does away with subtly expressing adolescent issues like menstruation, hormonal changes, crushes and changing bodies. It also goes beyond using

representation as a mere ‘woke’ theme, instead, it smartly uses a multi-cultural urban setting to carry its narrative forward. The result is a recognisable work of art that brings back the Pixar magic on screen.
