365Telugu.com online news,Kutch, 16th July 2025: In a major conservation milestone, the Gujarat Forest Department, in collaboration with Vantara—a wildlife rescue and conservation initiative by Anant Ambani—successfully introduced 20 spotted deer into a 70-hectare protected zone of the Banni Grasslands. This move marks a significant step in enhancing wildlife diversity in one of Asia’s largest and most critical grassland ecosystems.
The spotted deer were translocated from Vantara’s ex-situ conservation facility in Jamnagar and brought to Kutch in specially equipped ambulances. Their release was carefully executed under the direct supervision of the Forest Department, with Vantara offering comprehensive technical and logistical support in line with established wildlife protocols.
Ahead of the translocation, a joint habitat assessment was carried out by teams from both the Forest Department and Vantara. The study evaluated habitat readiness and identified ecological measures to support future species restoration initiatives. Forest officials, Vantara’s wildlife biologists, and veterinarians jointly led this review, reinforcing Gujarat’s broader conservation roadmap.

Dr. Brij Kishor Gupta, Director of the Greens Zoological, Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre, noted, “This project highlights the power of collaboration in conservation. Scientific knowledge combined with infrastructure support can meaningfully strengthen biodiversity in Banni.”
Spanning 2,618 sq. km in Kutch, the Banni Grasslands are home to 12 recorded mammal species, including Indian gazelle, Indian wolf, golden jackal, nilgai, striped hyena, and Indian fox. The Gujarat Forest Department continues to restore degraded areas, control invasive species, and promote the growth of native grasses essential to sustaining this delicate ecosystem.
The introduction of the spotted deer is a critical part of ongoing efforts to rebalance the Banni ecosystem. Vantara remains a dedicated partner, offering scientific, veterinary, and operational expertise to bolster the state’s conservation efforts. Together, the partnership is advancing India’s natural heritage through collaborative and science-driven action.
