365Telugu.com online news, New Zealand, May 11, 2025 : Early teens transitioning to high school and exploring their self-identity require greater access to support and resources, asserts University of Canterbury (UC) researcher Dr Valerie Sotardi.

Her recent ‘Our Voices’ study, involving approximately 1000 13-year-olds in Aotearoa, pinpoints these two areas as the leading causes of stress in this age group.

Dr Sotardi hopes the study’s insights will guide the creation of more effective support services for adolescents.

The research revealed that academic pressures and social dynamics at school, along with the journey of self-discovery and acceptance, were the most frequently cited challenges. Teens reported relying heavily on family, friends, and sometimes even online influencers to navigate these difficulties.

Distraction techniques like gaming and creative outlets also played a significant role in managing stress.

Dr Sotardi stresses the importance of understanding adolescence as a pivotal developmental period with common stressors, enabling educators and community organizations to develop targeted interventions that promote positive relationships and cultivate supportive school environments for young people in New Zealand.
