Nirmala Sitharaman, will lead a delegation from the Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance, on an official visit to Bhutan from October 30 to November 2, 2025, to strengthen bilateral ties and economic cooperation.
The visit commences with a tour of the historic Sangchen Choekhor Monastery, established in 1765 and home to over 100 monks pursuing advanced Buddhist studies. Smt. Sitharaman will also inspect key India-supported projects, including the Kurichhu Hydropower Plant, Gyalsung Academy, Sangchen Choekhor Monastery, and Punakha Dzong.
During the visit, the Union Finance Minister will meet His Majesty the King of Bhutan, H.E. Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, and Prime Minister H.E. Dasho Tshering Tobgay. A bilateral meeting with Bhutan’s Finance Minister, Mr. Lekey Dorji, will focus on deepening India-Bhutan economic and financial collaboration.

Smt. Sitharaman will attend presentations on Bhutan’s developmental priorities, covering:
- Bhutan’s energy sector by Druk Green Power Corporation Limited (DGPC)
- The 21st Century Economic Roadmap
- Banking and financial sector updates by Druk PNB and Bank of Bhutan
- The Gelephu Mindfulness City project
She will also visit the Cottage & Small Industries (CSI) Market to observe a transaction using India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI), highlighting the strengthening digital and financial connectivity between the two nations.

The visit will conclude with a stop at Punakha Dzong, Bhutan’s second-oldest and second-largest dzong. En route, Smt. Sitharaman will engage with Bhutanese farmers to gain insights into their agricultural practices, challenges, and opportunities.
This visit reaffirms the deep-rooted India-Bhutan partnership, built on mutual trust, respect, and a shared vision for regional progress and prosperity.
