365Telugu.com online news,August 23rd,2024: Varicose veins are a widespread condition that affects nearly 60% of women globally, yet they are often misunderstood and surrounded by misconceptions. These veins become enlarged, elongated, or twisted due to malfunctioning valves within the veins. Normally, these valves prevent blood from flowing backward, but when they are damaged, blood pools in the veins, leading to venous hypertension and fluid leakage into surrounding tissues. This results in the development of varicose veins.

Dr. Achintya Sharma, Senior Consultant and Head of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at Max and Tirath Ram Shah Hospital, notes that many people mistakenly believe varicose veins are merely a cosmetic issue. In reality, they can cause significant health problems. Symptoms of varicose veins include pain, swelling, itching, skin changes, and even ulcers. If left untreated, complications such as superficial thrombophlebitis (inflammation of veins due to blood clots) and bleeding can occur, which can worsen over time.

The condition affects a substantial portion of the population, with 40-60% of women and 15-30% of men experiencing varicose veins. Risk factors include age, gender, genetics, prolonged standing, obesity, and lifestyle habits like smoking or wearing tight clothing.

Contrary to popular belief, varicose veins are not just an issue for older women. People of all ages and genders can develop them, often due to an inactive lifestyle or genetic predisposition. Fortunately, there are many treatment options available today, many of which are minimally invasive and require little to no recovery time.

It’s also essential to debunk the myth that varicose veins will inevitably return after treatment. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle regular exercise, a balanced diet, and avoiding tobacco use can help prevent varicose veins. However, if you experience symptoms, seeking professional treatment can provide relief and improve your quality of life.
