Former President Donald Trump announced the Gold Card Visa scheme, which allows immigrants to stay in the U.S. by paying a fee of $5 million. This scheme is quite old, being 35 years old. Under the EB Visa scheme, anyone can obtain U.S. residency by investing $1 million.

Introduced in 1990 to attract foreign investment, the scheme has faced allegations of abuse in recent years. Now, the Gold Card Visa plan has raised its fee fivefold to $5 million. Due to the high cost, the scheme may be out of reach for the middle class.

A $5 million fee means that only the wealthiest individuals and big businessmen in India will be able to avail of this scheme to settle in the U.S. This could increase the challenges for skilled professionals from India who have been waiting for a Green Card for a long time. In some cases, waiting for a Green Card could take decades.
Payment Must Be in Cash

Those applying under EB-5 can take loans or raise funds, but under the Gold Card, the entire amount must be paid in cash. Due to this, the scheme may not be accessible to many Indians. The H-1B work visa remains the most preferred route for Indians. Indians holding an H-1B visa can also apply for the Gold Card, provided they have the financial capacity to pay the $5 million fee.
