365Telugu.com online news,March 12th,2025: The European Union has swiftly retaliated against the U.S. by imposing new tariffs on American industrial and agricultural products, responding to the Trump administration’s decision to levy a 25% tariff on all steel and aluminum imports.
The EU, anticipating the move, had prepared countermeasures in advance. However, the decision has further strained transatlantic trade relations. Last month, Washington warned Europe that it would have to manage its own security in the future, signaling growing tensions.

The new EU tariffs will affect U.S. goods worth approximately €26 billion ($28 billion), extending beyond steel and aluminum to include textiles, home appliances, and agricultural products. Iconic American exports such as motorcycles, bourbon, peanut butter, and jeans—previously targeted during Trump’s first term—will once again be hit.

Targeted Trade Measures
The European Commission has strategically designed the tariffs to impact key U.S. economic sectors while minimizing harm to European businesses. The duties are set to affect Republican-stronghold states, hitting soybean exports in Louisiana, beef and poultry in Kansas and Nebraska, and produce in Alabama, Georgia, and Virginia.
EU Calls for Dialogue
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized that the EU remains open to negotiations, stating, “As the U.S. applies tariffs worth $28 billion, we are responding with countermeasures worth €26 billion.”

While the EU is taking protective action, von der Leyen warned about the broader consequences of escalating trade conflicts. “Jobs are at stake. Prices will rise in both Europe and the United States. These tariffs disrupt supply chains and create economic uncertainty.”
The EU’s countermeasures will target steel, aluminum, textiles, leather goods, home appliances, household tools, plastics, and wood, alongside key agricultural products such as poultry, beef, seafood, nuts, eggs, sugar, and vegetables.

Although Trump has defended his tariffs as a means to boost American manufacturing jobs, von der Leyen countered, stating, “Tariffs are taxes. They harm businesses and consumers alike.”
As trade tensions escalate, both economies now face increased pressure, with the possibility of further retaliatory measures looming.
