365Telugu.com online news,National, April 22nd, 2025: JSW Energy Limited, a leading private-sector power producer and part of the $24 billion JSW Group, has officially begun construction of its 1,600 MW (2×800 MW) ultra supercritical thermal power plant in Salboni, West Bengal. This marks the company’s largest greenfield project to date, with a total investment of ₹16,000 crore.
The foundation stone was laid in the presence of the Hon’ble Chief Minister of West Bengal, Ms. Mamata Banerjee, alongside JSW Group Chairman Mr. Sajjan Jindal, JSW Foundation Chairperson Ms. Sangita Jindal, and Mr. Parth Jindal, among other dignitaries.
The project is backed by a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (WBSEDCL) and will use domestic coal allocated under the SHAKTI B (IV) policy, contributing to regional energy security and economic development.
Strategic Impact and Regional Development
The Salboni project plays a key role in JSW Energy’s East India expansion strategy, aiming to boost industrial infrastructure and generate thousands of direct and indirect jobs. The initiative emphasizes skill development and local sourcing to support the socio-economic progress of the Salboni region.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Sajjan Jindal said, “This 1,600 MW ultra supercritical thermal power plant is not just our largest greenfield project but also the biggest private-sector thermal power initiative in West Bengal. We are also establishing a 2,000-acre JSW Industrial Park in Salboni with plug-and-play infrastructure, designed as per modern urban planning standards. It promises to be a game-changer for industrial growth in the region.”

Focus on Sustainability and Future Plans
JSW Energy remains committed to sustainable growth, earning a ‘Leadership Band (A-)’ rating in CDP Climate Change for the third consecutive year—India’s highest rating in the power sector. The company is actively investing in green hydrogen and energy storage to enable affordable and reliable energy solutions.
The company is on track to achieve its 20 GW power generation target well before 2030, with more than 30 GW of capacity already secured. By June 2025, JSW Energy expects to reach an installed capacity of 14 GW. In the energy storage domain, it is developing projects totaling 16.3 GWh, including India’s largest pumped hydro storage project (12 GWh), and aims to reach 40 GWh by 2030.
