Russia’s Investigative Committee said it has opened an investigation into the terrorist attack.
The attacks took place on police posts, churches and places of worship in the cities of Derbent and Makhachkala. In a statement, the Directorate of Investigation said that they are ascertaining all the circumstances related to the incident and the persons involved in the terrorist attacks and strict legal action will be taken against them.
Local officials said seven officers, a priest and a church security guard were among the dead. According to the Russian news agency TASS, six terrorists were killed.

According to Dagestan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs, one of the slain officers was the head of the police department, Mavludin Khidiranbiev. Meanwhile, a prayer meeting in Derbent was set on fire. At the same time, a prayer meeting and a police post in Makhachkala were also fired upon.

Israel’s foreign ministry called it a joint attack on two prayer meetings. The ministry said in a statement that prayer meetings were attacked in Makhachkala and Derbent. In this, the Derbent prayer meeting was set on fire. A local guard was killed there. In Makhachkala too, the prayer meeting was attacked with bullets. There were no casualties from the Jewish community.
